Abia State Governor Alex Otti has ramped up efforts to rejuvenate the moribund Star Paper Mill in Aba, which ceased operations several years ago. On a tour of the Geometric Power plant, he revealed ongoing negotiations with the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) regarding acquisition and evaluation of the mill, with a goal to restart production by year-end. He emphasized that erratic power supply had previously crippled the factory’s operations and expressed confidence that resolving this will pave the way for its revival.

The governor’s interest in the mill aligns with broader energy infrastructure initiatives in Abia. He praised Aba Integrated Power for its strides in electricity generation and distribution, noting that increased capacity could support industrial revival across the state—including the paper mill. Plans are underway to acquire the Umuahia distribution network from EEDC to streamline power delivery within the state capital and its industrial zones.

Reviving the mill isn’t just about production—it also aims to restore jobs and economic vibrancy in Aba. Star Paper Mill once served as a major employer, running 24/7 and leveraging Italian equipment acquired with significant investment. The return of consistent power and targeted investment is expected to incentivize both local and foreign investors, further bolstered by Otti’s pro-business policies and partnerships with the EU .

Harnessing energy solutions and industrial policy underlines Otti’s broader strategy for Abia’s transformation—an approach that could see Aba’s industrial hub restored to its former prominence.
