3.5 Million Nigerian Children Suffering Severe Acute Malnutrition – UNICEF
Omoyeni Olabode

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised concern over the alarming rate of severe acute malnutrition affecting Nigerian children, revealing that at least 3.5 million children across the country are currently suffering from the condition. This form of malnutrition, described as life-threatening, significantly increases the risk of death and long-term developmental complications if left untreated.
UNICEF warned that unless immediate and comprehensive interventions are implemented, thousands of children may die from preventable causes linked to hunger and poor nutrition. The agency called on the Nigerian government and partners to scale up investment in nutrition programmes, provide therapeutic foods, and improve access to clean water, healthcare, and sanitation, especially in conflict-affected and impoverished regions.
