A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Umar Sani, has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a better candidate for northern interests in the 2027 presidential election than Labour Party’s Peter Obi. Sani, who served as a political adviser to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, made the comment during an interview, emphasizing that Jonathan’s experience and prior working relationship with the North gives him an edge.

According to Sani, the North remembers that Jonathan maintained a strong alliance with northern leaders during his time in office and that many of the region’s political elites still regard him as trustworthy. He argued that despite Obi’s rising popularity, especially among young Nigerians and in the South, the North may not be comfortable rallying behind a candidate perceived as lacking historical ties with the region’s political structure.

Dr. Sani also hinted that discussions are ongoing within the PDP to assess viable candidates for the 2027 elections, and said the possibility of Jonathan contesting again is not out of the question. He maintained that winning the presidency in 2027 would require a figure who has both national appeal and proven experience, which, he claimed, Jonathan possesses more than Obi.
