2027 Elections May Hold Same Day Nationwide – Reps Propose Major Electoral Reform
Omoyeni Olabode

The House of Representatives has introduced a proposal for all five major elections in 2027 to be conducted on a single day. This includes the presidential, governorship, National Assembly, State Assembly, and area council elections. The change is part of the new Electoral Act 2025, which lawmakers believe will help cut down costs and simplify the voting process across the country.
Supporters of the bill argue that the one-day election model will improve voter turnout, reduce election-related violence, and limit the advantage of incumbency by shortening the campaign season. It is also seen as a way to lessen the burden on INEC and security agencies who typically stretch resources over staggered election days.
While some Nigerians welcome the reform, others are raising questions about INEC’s capacity to handle such a massive electoral operation in one day. The bill is still under consideration and will face debates and possible amendments before it can be passed into law.
