2025 VMAs: Tyla Wins Best Afrobeats as Nigerian Stars Miss Out

South African singer Tyla has won the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards for her hit song "Push 2 Start", marking her second consecutive win in this category following her 2024 win for Water.
The victory came amid strong competition from celebrated Nigerian artists—including Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, Wizkid, and Asake—who were nominated but ultimately left empty-handed.
Tyla’s win adds to a night dominated by global heavyweights like Lady Gaga, who clinched multiple top awards, including Artist of the Year, while Rosé (from BLACKPINK) took home Song of the Year
