12 States Approve N102bn for Governors’ Lodges, SUVs

Twelve Nigerian states have approved a combined N102 billion for the renovation of governors’ lodges and the purchase of new SUVs for government officials. The decision was reached in recent budget approvals and supplementary requests passed by the various state Houses of Assembly.
According to official records and state documents, some of the states involved in the spending include Rivers, Ogun, Abia, Niger, Kogi, and Sokoto. The funds will be used for upgrading official residences, furnishing, and acquiring high-end vehicles for governors, deputies, and other top-ranking state executives. In several cases, the states defended the spending as necessary to replace aging assets and improve the work environment for public officials.
However, the decision has sparked criticism from the public and civic groups, who argue that the money could have been channelled into health, education, and poverty relief. As many Nigerians continue to struggle with high inflation and economic hardship, questions are being raised about the priorities of state governments at a time when resources are scarce.
